On July 4, the world's most famous cycling race will make history as the Tour de France starts from Barcelona for the first time ever. The 2026 Grand Départ, which will also pass through Tarragona and Granollers before heading towards France, will place Catalonia in front of a global audience of millions.

But beyond the sporting spectacle, the event also shines a spotlight on a relationship that extends far beyond cycling. France and Catalonia share one of Europe's most dynamic economic partnerships, built on trade, investment, innovation, and a growing network of companies operating on both sides of the border.

As the Tour prepares to roll out from Barcelona, Catalonia is not only welcoming cyclists and fans. It is also reinforcing its position as one of the most attractive business destinations for French companies looking to grow in Southern Europe.

More than neighbors: a strategic economic partnership

The economic ties between France and Catalonia continue to strengthen year after year. France remains Catalonia's leading export market, with Catalan exports reaching €15.9 billion in 2025, a figure that has grown by more than 50% over the past decade. Today, more than 4,400 Catalan companies export regularly to France, highlighting the depth of the commercial relationship.

Investment flows are equally significant. French investment in Catalonia reached €2.27 billion between 2021 and 2025, making France the fourth-largest source of foreign investment in the region. At the same time, business links have become increasingly interconnected: nearly 1,400 French subsidiaries operate in Catalonia, while more than 500 subsidiaries of Catalan companies are established in France.

“The Grand Départ is first and foremost a sporting moment, but it is also a very precise statement about capability”

Christophe Arnoul, Director of Catalonia Trade & Investment in Paris

According to Christophe Arnoul, Director of Catalonia Trade & Investment in Paris, the relationship continues to evolve beyond its traditional foundations.

"The relationship is deep and it keeps deepening," he explains. "What has changed in recent years is the nature of that presence. The historical waves of French investment came through retail, automotive components, and industrial manufacturing. Today, they are being joined by a second wave built around technology, innovation, and the energy transition."

This evolution reflects broader changes in the European economy, where companies increasingly seek locations that combine industrial strength, innovation capacity, international talent, and strategic connectivity.

A showcase of Catalonia's capabilities

For Arnoul, the Tour de France's choice of Catalonia as host of its opening stages sends a powerful message to international investors.

"The Grand Départ is first and foremost a sporting moment, but it is also a very precise statement about capability," he says. "Hosting three stages across 60 municipalities with a global broadcast reaching hundreds of millions of households requires mobility planning, security coordination, hospitality infrastructure, and the ability to work with dozens of public and private partners on a tight timeline."

These are many of the same factors international companies evaluate when selecting locations for manufacturing facilities, logistics operations, technology hubs, or regional headquarters.

The route itself also reflects the close connection between the two territories.

"The race leaves Barcelona and heads toward the Pyrenees and into France within days," Arnoul notes. "It is a literal illustration of how connected the two economies already are."

Why French companies choose Catalonia

Over the years, Catalonia has become a preferred destination for French companies seeking access to Southern European markets.

According to Arnoul, three factors consistently drive investment decisions.

The first is geography. Located between France, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean, Catalonia offers direct access to major European and international markets from a single base of operations.

The second is the strength of its industrial and innovation ecosystem. Catalonia combines one of the European Union's largest manufacturing bases with world-class clusters in sectors such as life sciences, chemicals, mobility, and digital technologies. The region is also home to a highly skilled, multilingual workforce that supports both industrial operations and knowledge-intensive activities.

The third factor is familiarity.

"Several French groups mention cultural and logistical familiarity as a genuine advantage," says Arnoul. "The time difference is zero, transport connections are excellent, and quality of life has become increasingly important when attracting and retaining international talent."

These advantages help explain why leading French multinationals continue to expand their presence in Catalonia.

French success stories driving innovation in Catalonia

French companies have played a significant role in Catalonia's economic development for decades, while continuing to invest in new projects that support innovation and sustainability.

Among them, Schneider Electric has established major operations in Catalonia focused on digital transformation and energy efficiency solutions.

In the aerospace sector, Airbus continues to strengthen its activities in the region, leveraging Catalonia's growing capabilities in advanced engineering and digital technologies.

The life sciences sector has also attracted major investment from companies such as Sanofi, which benefits from Catalonia's internationally recognized healthcare and research ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Danone and Alstom represent the longstanding industrial and manufacturing ties that continue to connect the two economies.

Together, these companies illustrate how Catalonia offers an environment where global businesses can combine innovation, talent, industrial capabilities, and access to international markets.

Looking ahead: the next stage of growth

Today, the strongest momentum is emerging in sectors that will shape Europe's future competitiveness. Life sciences, green energy, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable mobility are generating growing interest among French investors.

Catalonia's position within the emerging Mediterranean green energy corridor, including projects linking Barcelona and Marseille, is creating new opportunities for collaboration in hydrogen, renewable energy, and industrial decarbonization.

At the same time, Barcelona's status as one of Europe's leading technology hubs continues to attract French companies looking to establish innovation centers and access international talent.

Against this backdrop, Catalonia Trade & Investment and Business France will bring together executives from French companies established in Catalonia and Catalan companies operating in France at a business gathering in Barcelona on July 3, just ahead of the Grand Départ. The event reflects the growing density of business relationships that connect both territories and the shared ambition to build new partnerships in the years ahead.

As the Tour de France begins its journey from Catalonia, it offers more than a sporting celebration. It provides a reminder that some of the strongest connections between France and Catalonia are not only measured in kilometers, but also in trade, investment, innovation, and a common vision for growth.

And much like the race itself, the next chapter of this partnership is already underway.
