“Thanks to its creative ecosystem, Barcelona is recognized as an international hub for design and development centers in the fashion sector”
Fashion & Design ecosystem
in Catalonia
Modern and innovative design are signature trends in Catalonia, home to world-renowned architect Gaudí, whose striking and nature-inspired buildings have had a lasting influence far beyond architecture.
Barcelona-Catalonia, a global benchmark in the fashion and design industries.
Barcelona-Catalonia stands out internationally in the fashion and design industries. The sector, which includes textiles, footwear, jewelry, and habitat, combines a strong industrial tradition with a clear international outlook. Today, the fashion and leather industry alone generates more than €17.5 billion in turnover, with over 950 companies employing more than 73,000 people.
Catalonia is also one of the most attractive regions globally for investment in the sector, ranking as the fifth region worldwide in terms of foreign direct investment projects attracted over the past five years.
Some of the most international fashion brands include Mango, Munich, Nice Things, Pronovias, Tous, and Desigual, alongside companies such as Textura, Kibuc, Figueras, Marset, Lamp, Leds C4, Simon, Kettal, and Roca in the home and lighting sectors. The Catalonia Industry Suppliers platform allows users to identify providers across fashion, textiles, and home-related categories.
Barcelona, an international design center
Barcelona and Catalonia enjoy a strong reputation in Europe for design education and host some of the most prominent schools, attracting thousands of international students each year. These include BAU Design College of Barcelona, Eina, LCI Barcelona, IED Barcelona, ESDi, Elisava, and Massana School.
In recent years, Barcelona has also become a preferred destination for architects, designers, photographers, and creative professionals from around the world. Professional associations such as FAD (Fostering Arts and Design) and ADP (Association of Professional Designers) support the growth and development of the sector.
Thanks to this creative ecosystem, Barcelona is recognized as an international hub for design and development centers. Companies such as Reebok, XAL, Stradivarius, Bershka, Massimo Dutti, Philips, Desigual, Mango, M.C.B., and Asics have established key operations in the region.

The Barcelona Brand
Barcelona holds a strong and distinctive city brand. Design “Made in Barcelona”, with its roots in tradition, modernism, creativity, and innovation, has developed a recognizable identity that is highly valued internationally.
The city is also a benchmark for innovation and entrepreneurship, supported by assets such as the 22@Barcelona district, a dense network of advanced service companies, and a strong entrepreneurial culture.
This positioning is further reinforced by international events such as the 080 Barcelona Fashion, which brings together established brands, emerging designers, and global creative talent, consolidating Barcelona’s role as an international fashion platform.
A textile industry always ahead of the latest technologies
Since the Industrial Revolution, Catalonia has maintained a strong textile and fashion industry. Today, this legacy translates into a sector where design and innovation are essential to meeting high manufacturing standards.
Catalonia hosts a network of leading technological centers focused on the textile industry, including Eurecat, Leitat, Fitex, and Intertext.
Over the past decade, the sector has accounted for around 30% of Spain’s total textile exports, underlining its economic relevance. Many international companies — including ASICS, Louis Vuitton, Levi Strauss, Pepe Jeans, Ermenegildo Zegna, Nike, Calzedonia, Grupo Estrada, and Muji — have established headquarters in Barcelona or Catalonia for the Iberian Peninsula or Southern Europe.
A strong commitment to innovation
Catalonia’s fashion and design ecosystem is also driven by innovation. The sector includes 79 startups, spanning product design, manufacturing, retail, and specialized services across the value chain.
At the same time, technological transformation is reshaping the industry. Key technologies such as artificial intelligence are accelerating design processes and automating creative workflows, while augmented and virtual reality are transforming the relationship between brands, products, and customers by enhancing visualization, sales, and decision-making. The Internet of Things (IoT) is also playing an increasingly relevant role, particularly in quality control and the consistency of industrial processes.
New trends in the habitat sector
The homeware and furnishings sector, including furniture, lighting, home textiles, sanitaryware, and surface materials, is a growing and internationalized industry with a strong design focus.
More broadly, the sector is adapting to a changing global context shaped by trends such as nearshoring, inflation, rising logistics costs, and increasingly fragmented supply chains. At the same time, consumer behavior is becoming more value-driven and rational, while sustainability challenges, from climate risk and supply chain emissions to increasing regulatory scrutiny around greenwashing, are gaining prominence. There is also a growing focus on extending responsibility across the entire product lifecycle.
In this context, companies are accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies and more sustainable practices, enabling them to respond to new market demands and remain competitive at an international level.
