Spanish authorities seek to strengthen rail freight

The spanish ministry of public works has announced an investment of eur 7.5 billion to boost rail freight activity over the next 10 years. the new strategic plan is part of an agreement with the country's autonomous communities to upgrade the railway system and create an interconnection platform.
the project will promote a new network of logistics terminals (most of them are new facilities), electrification of rail lines and improved liaisons with the network of port facilities. the spanish railway system moves only 4.1% of freight, compared with germany's 22.2% and france's 15.9%. the plan aims to increase rail freight to 10% by 2020.
