The American multinational Procter & Gamble (P&G) has greatly increased its investment in Catalonia with a second production line for Ariel liquid detergent, thereby enabling a rise of 100% in production its Mataró factory in the Maresme, raising output to 77.000 Tonnes per year. This new enlargement has led to the creation of 62 jobs, pushing up the workforce to some 300 staff.
“Enlargement of the facility illustrates P&G’s commitment to Spain both as an end consumer as well as a reference point for distribution of our products across the continent,” confirmed Antoni Ciller, representative of the company at the Catalan production plant yesterday. At present, the product, which first came off the production line in 2008, is now being exported to Portugal, France and Italy.
P&G started up in Mataró back in 1971 producing the Ace line of bleaches, as well as Ariel washing powder. In 2008 it moved a production line of liquid washing detergent from its Amiens plant in France to Catalonia. The factory in Mataró has since proved to be so competitive that the Cincinnati based multinational took the decision to double production of the detergent in Spain.
P&G has been continually investing in Catalonia over the last few years. Apart from the Ariel liquid lines, the firm also reached an agreement with DHL at the beginning of 2009 to buy its 21,000m2 logistics centre to be used as a distribution hub for its detergents.
