The Barcelona-based global company will expand its biotech hub to meet growing European demand.
Grifols, a Barcelona-based global leader in the production of plasma-derived medicines, has announced a €160 million investment to build a new manufacturing facility in Lliçà de Vall (Barcelona). The project will double the company's plasma fractionation capacity in Europe, reinforcing its longstanding commitment to Catalonia, Spain, and the wider European market.
The new plant, spanning over 80,000 square meters, will be part of a 25-hectare biotechnology hub adjacent to Grifols' historic site in nearby Parets del Vallès. Operations are expected to begin in 2030, and the complex is set to create more than 400 highly qualified jobs, bringing Grifols' total headcount in the Vallès Oriental area to over 3,700 employees.

"Spain and Catalonia are strategic partners for our long-term growth and for jointly advancing scientific progress in healthcare, as well as the region's industrial, environmental, and social development. Expanding our production capacity will allow us to meet the growing European demand for plasma-derived medicines from our new facilities. In doing so, Grifols continues to fulfill its core mission: to care for the health and well-being of the more than 300,000 European patients who rely on our therapies," said Nacho Abia, CEO of Grifols.
He added: "We are especially pleased to expand our presence in the Vallès Oriental area, which we plan to call home for a long time to come."
The new facilities will include a plasma fractionation plant, quality control labs, logistics operations, and warehouses, as well as a dedicated space for Grifols Engineering, the in-house division responsible for designing and constructing world-class biopharmaceutical facilities.
Grifols also highlighted its sustainability goals for the site, which will be powered entirely by renewable electricity and managed through advanced digital systems to ensure energy efficiency. The company will apply circular economy practices throughout the complex, focusing on reuse, recycling, and resource optimization.
Local authorities welcomed the expansion. "We are proud and delighted to welcome Grifols to Lliçà de Vall, where we look forward to collaborating to build a sustainable and lasting relationship for the mutual benefit of the people of Lliçà and Grifols," said Xavi Castillejo, Mayor of Lliçà de Vall.
Francesc Juzgado, Mayor of Parets del Vallès, added: "Parets de Vallès, home to Grifols' world-class manufacturing for more than 50 years, is delighted that the company will not only continue to be an integral part of Parets but also expand right next door, establishing a powerful biotechnology center of excellence."
Founded in Barcelona in 1909, Grifols employs around 4,600 people in Spain and generates more than 16,000 indirect jobs. The company contributes over €1.5 billion to the Spanish economy annually—a figure expected to grow as the Lliçà de Vall plant becomes operational.
A pioneer in the plasma industry, Grifols has the largest network of donation centers in the world, with approximately 400 centers across North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and China.
