Catalonia also concentrates half of the industrial pharma companies in Spain: a total of 79 industrial plants are located in the region and have 15,806 employees.

Exports represent €7.78B in life sciences and healthcare products (2021), Catalonia being Spain's number 1 exporter region in this sector. Furthermore, since 2008, capital investment in Catalonia’s life sciences companies has multiplied by 12, and life sciences startups are the 2nd most numerous within the Catalan startup ecosystem.

Catalonia, a leader in clinical trials in Europe

Catalonia offers the best technological centers & research infrastructures to support the life sciences and healthcare sector. Barcelona ranks in the top positions in active clinical trials. Catalonia ranks second in the world regarding the number of trials per million inhabitants, only behind Denmark and surpassing countries such as the Netherlands or Switzerland.

Most top pharmaceutical companies choose Barcelona to run their trials. Catalonia leads Spain in the number of current patent families, making up 35% of the country’s total, above the Community of Madrid.
