The new boiler is scheduled to start operating by mid-2025 as part of Nestlé's commitment to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Nestlé is investing €22 million in a second biomass boiler at its Catalonia coffee factory. The company has initiated the construction of a second boiler at its facilities in Girona, which is dedicated to producing Nescafé soluble coffee and Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules.

The new boiler is expected to be operating by mid-2025. This significant investment will complement the existing boiler, which has been operational since 2020, after an initial investment of over 17 million euros.

“Sustainability is fully integrated into our strategy, and with this investment, the Girona coffee factory is a clear example of circularity throughout the production process.”

Jordi Llach, Nestlé Spain's CEO

The CEO of Nestlé Spain, Jordi Llach, announced this important investment during his first meeting with the media this morning. For Llach, "sustainability is fully integrated into our strategy, and with this investment, the Girona coffee factory is a clear example of circularity throughout the production process. Moreover, with these actions, Nestlé continues to lead the transition towards sustainable food".

Last year, the Girona coffee factory generated more than 52,000 tons of coffee grounds. With the commissioning of the second biomass boiler, 100% of this waste will be recycled. In addition to these coffee grounds, the new boiler will also use wood chips from sustainably managed and Sure-certified forests in Catalonia.

Each Girona biomass boiler will generate approximately 116,000 tons of steam annually. By the end of 2025, 80% of the factory's steam needs are expected to come from these renewable sources.

Nestlé Spain is steadfast in its commitment to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To this end, it continues to work towards environmental sustainability in its production processes.

In Catalonia, Nestlé also built a technology and innovation center in Barcelona six years ago to deliver technology at scale, speed, agility, and efficiency to all markets and brands worldwide.

According to Susana Pastor, Global IT Barcelona Hub Manager, Nestlé decided to be in Barcelona because it's one of the most attractive cities in the world. Connecting to the local tech ecosystem and startups has helped the company evolve and innovate.
