Barcelona continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading technology hubs. According to a new economic impact report commissioned by the GSMA, MWC Barcelona 2026 generated an estimated €588 million for the local economy and created more than 14,000 part-time jobs, marking another record year for the world’s largest connectivity event.
MWC Barcelona 2026 generated an estimated €588 million for Barcelona and Catalonia’s economy and created more than 14,000 part-time jobs, marking another record year for the world’s largest connectivity event. These figures were released in a report commissioned by the GSMA.
The 2026 edition was particularly significant, celebrating the 20th anniversary of MWC in Barcelona. Over the past two decades, the event has become a cornerstone of Catalonia’s innovation ecosystem, generating a cumulative economic impact of €7.5 billion and creating 187,000 part-time jobs since its arrival in the Catalan capital in 2006.
This year, nearly 105,000 attendees from 207 countries and territories gathered in Barcelona, bringing together global technology leaders, investors, startups, policymakers and innovators to discuss the future of connectivity, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and emerging technologies.
A global showcase for Catalonia’s innovation ecosystem
Beyond its economic contribution, MWC serves as a powerful international platform to showcase Catalonia’s strengths in technology, innovation and business.
The 2026 edition featured 2,900 exhibitors, sponsors and partners, while more than 1,700 speakers took part in conference sessions and industry discussions. The event also attracted nearly 2,600 journalists and analysts from around the world, amplifying the international visibility of Barcelona and Catalonia as a business destination.
Importantly, 58% of attendees came from industries beyond the traditional mobile ecosystem, reflecting the growing role of connectivity and digital technologies across sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, mobility, finance and energy.
A long-term partnership between Barcelona and MWC
The long-term success of MWC in Barcelona is closely linked to the evolution of its public-private ecosystem and the city’s strategic positioning as a global innovation hub.
Speaking during MWC26 Barcelona in an interview with Catalonia Trade & Investment, Lara Dewar, Chief Marketing Officer at GSMA, highlighted how the impact of MWC extends far beyond the event itself.
“I think that some of the programs that we do extend the impact of MWC. So Four Years From Now, mSchools, or Mobile World Capitalcontinue the conversation over the course of a year and have been very instrumental in ensuring that Barcelona becomes known as a technological hub,” she said.
Dewar also reflected on the origins of the partnership between the city and the event: “Back in 2006, Barcelona was chosen as the host city. At the time there was a very competitive bid process and Barcelona presented itself very well. There was this notion that Barcelona and MWC needed each other. They were the right size for each other", she explained.
She added that the relationship has evolved into a long-term shared vision: “And so there was this beautiful marriage of two entities coming together to really cast a vision for something that they could see building over time.”
Startups, talent and investment at the heart of MWC
The startup ecosystem also played a prominent role. 4YFN (Four Years From Now), the entrepreneurship platform held alongside MWC, welcomed more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 300 speakers. The event attracted hundreds of investors managing combined funds worth approximately €70 billion, creating opportunities for startups to connect with global capital and scale internationally.
Meanwhile, Talent Arena, organized by Mobile World Capital Barcelona and held at Fira Montjuïc, brought together more than 25,000 attendees, highlighting Catalonia’s commitment to attracting and developing digital talent.
Twenty years of collaboration and innovation
The success of MWC Barcelona is closely linked to a long-standing public-private partnership involving the GSMA, the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Fira de Barcelona and other key stakeholders.
Over the years, this collaboration has helped strengthen Catalonia’s digital ecosystem through initiatives such as mSchools, a program that promotes digital skills in education. Since its launch, mSchools has reached more than 530,000 students, 18,600 teachers and over 3,500 schools.
Sustainability also remains a priority. Through the MWC Donation Room initiative, nine tonnes of furniture and materials from this year’s event were recovered and redistributed to 35 social and community organizations in Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, avoiding an estimated 8.9 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Catalonia’s role as a European technology hub
The latest figures underline the strategic importance of MWC for Catalonia’s economy and international positioning. Two decades after the event first arrived in Barcelona, the annual gathering continues to attract global decision-makers, foster investment opportunities and reinforce the region’s reputation as a leading destination for technology, innovation and digital business in Europe.
As digital transformation accelerates across industries worldwide, MWC remains one of the most visible examples of how Catalonia combines talent, innovation, connectivity and international collaboration to drive economic growth and technological leadership.
