Mediterra DataCenters will build a next-generation, 100% green-powered data center in Barcelona, strengthening Catalonia’s role as a leading hub for AI and digital infrastructure.
Mediterra DataCenters, a Southern European data center platform headquartered in Milan, has announced its entry into the Spanish market by developing a next-generation data center in the Barcelona metropolitan area, in the industrial heart of Catalonia.
The company has already acquired a strategic plot of land and secured the required administrative approvals, including a 12 MW power connection, enabling the launch of the project’s development phase. The facility is expected to become operational in the second half of 2027.
Designed to meet growing demand for digital infrastructure, the new data center will deliver 8 MW of installed IT capacity in modular 1.3 MW blocks, ensuring scalability and flexibility for customers. The site will offer a total usable floor area of approximately 9,700 m².

The investment reinforces Barcelona’s growing role as a strategic hub for digital infrastructure, particularly in high-performance workloads such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC). The region is expected to benefit from a major expansion in submarine cable capacity across Southern Europe over the coming years, according to industry sources.
Emmanuel Becker, CEO of Mediterra DataCenters, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, "Barcelona represents the natural evolution of our Mediterranean growth strategy. Spain’s digital economy is booming, and the capital of Catalonia is increasingly emerging as a benchmark hub for AI and HPC workloads."
The new facility will be powered by 100% renewable energy and will integrate advanced sustainability measures, including a closed-loop cooling system that minimizes water consumption by reducing evaporative losses. Backup generators will run on HVO100, a fossil-free alternative fuel.
The data center will also be ready to support liquid cooling, a key requirement for high-density computing environments, and will be designed to enable residual heat recovery and exchange with local utilities, supporting Catalonia’s long-term sustainability goals. Built using Mediterra’s modular reference design, the facility will allow additional capacity to be added as demand grows, ensuring efficient scaling and optimized energy performance.
