Catalonia strengthens as Lidl’s logistics hub with a new warehouse, 200 jobs created, and more to come, supported by Catalonia Trade & Investment.

The German multinational Lidl has launched its new logistics platform in Martorell (Barcelona), where it has invested €140 million. This represents Lidl’s largest logistics investment in Spain since its arrival over three decades ago. The opening of the warehouse has led to the creation of 200 new jobs, a number the company expects to double in the coming months to 400 once the facility is fully operational.

For this expansion project, Lidl has received the support of Catalonia Trade & Investment, the agency for business competitiveness within the Ministry for Business and Labour.

“Thanks to this warehouse’s capacity and strategic location, we will be able to respond more efficiently to the sustainable and steady growth of our commercial network”

Imanol Zabala, General Manager for Expansion and Real Estate at Lidl Spain

Located in the Ca Xàmenes industrial estate, the new logistics center occupies a plot of more than 126,000 m², with a built area of over 66,000 m², 144 loading docks, and capacity to handle 120,000 pallets per month. Additionally, the warehouse features more than 5,800 m² of solar panels for self-consumption, which cover up to 30% of the company’s energy needs. Catalonia consolidates its position as the company’s main logistics hub in Spain, with three operating centers, including those in Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona) and Constantí (Tarragona).

Imanol Zabala, General Manager for Expansion and Real Estate at Lidl Spain, has stated, "The new platform in Martorell marks a milestone in our expansion and logistics strategy in SpainThanks to this warehouse’s capacity and strategic location, we will be able to respond more efficiently to the sustainable and steady growth of our commercial network and significantly improve the efficiency of our supply chain in the northeast of the country."

From the new Martorell warehouse, Lidl will strengthen its operational capacity in Catalonia, Aragon, Navarra, and the Balearic Islands, progressively supplying up to 130 stores in these territories. The warehouse began operations by supplying around thirty outlets in Catalonia and Aragon, and will expand its coverage in successive phases. This new logistics asset responds to the need to adapt distribution resources to the company’s expansion pace, which foresees the opening of 50 new stores in Spain in 2025. Of these, around 40 will be new establishments, and the rest will be modernizations and extensions of its current network.

With this new facility, the company now has 14 warehouses across Spain, a logistics network supplying more than 700 stores. The multinational has realized investments of over €1.5 billion in the last five years, aimed at expanding its logistics network and stores in the country.

In Catalonia, Lidl has close to 130 stores, more than 4,000 employees, and a network of 170 suppliers. According to the multinational, its activity has an impact of around €1.4 billion on the Catalan economy and also contributes to the creation of nearly 28,000 jobs annually, including direct, indirect, and induced employment.
