The opening of this warehouse, scheduled for 2025, will allow Lidl to continue generating local wealth and employment, consolidating its position as one of the main drivers of the catalan economy and labour market.
The German supermarket company Lidl has announced that it will invest 140 million euros in a new warehouse in Martorell (Barcelona). This is the company's largest logistics investment in Spain since its arrival 30 years ago.
The project, located on a 126,000 m2 site in the Xàmenes industrial park, aims to support and intensify the company's business development in northeastern Spain. The logistics warehouse is expected to be operational in 2025.
With a surface area of around 66,000 m2 and 144 docks, the Martorell facility will be one of the supermarket chain's largest warehouses in Spain and Europe, complementing the one it has been operating in Catalonia for years (also in Barcelona, in Montcada i Reixac, with a surface area of more than 46,000 m2). This operation responds to the company's need to adapt its logistical resources to the sustained growth it has recently experienced in this and other regions and will allow it to continue generating local wealth and employment, opening new modern and efficient stores, and purchasing more and more regional products.
Boost to the Catalan economy and labour market
With the opening of the logistics center in Martorell, Lidl aims to consolidate its position as one of the main drivers of the catalan economy and employment market. In this sense, the supermarket chain already has a network of more than 120 stores and employs more than 4,000 people in Catalonia, where its commitment to the agri-food industry already translates into a record annual purchase of more than 820 million euros worth of regional products from more than 180 suppliers. Thanks to its activities, Lidl's impact in Catalonia is already around 1,300 million euros per year in GDP (0.55% of the regional total) and 26,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs (0.74% of the regional total), according to the consulting firm PwC.
More logistics platforms on the horizon
The future Lidl warehouse in Martorell is part of a sustainable national expansion plan that includes other logistics projects, such as the opening of a new logistics warehouse in Constantí (Tarragona) -on a site of around 185,000 m2- and two other projects spread throughout the country. Lidl currently has a network of 12 logistics platforms in Spain.
