Swiss company ABB has opened in Sant Quirze del Vallès (Barcelona) its first robotics innovation center in Europe. The new center, with 1.200sqm, will employ 35 people and will develop digital solutions to provide knowledge and technology to local companies, entities, institutions, and individuals in the industry. The CEO of Catalonia Trade & Investment, Joan Romero, took part in the inauguration of the event.
The center will host a team of ABB Digital Robotics Accelerator that will use collaborative robots, augmented reality and 3D vision technologies to carry out new digital applications and proof of concept in collaboration with its partners. The new installations also have an auditorium with a 360-degree surround vision system so that engineers and designers can fully immerse themselves in augmented reality versions of the technologies they are working on.
According to ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation’s CEO in Spain, Sergio Martin, this innovation center will be used to "share the knowledge, technology, and experience of ABB in the field of digitalization and automation with academics, engineers and production experts from different industries".
During the inauguration various demonstrations have been made, such as that of a collaborative robot developed jointly with PAL Robotics that performs pipetting and tube handling for medical laboratories.
