Founded in Mexico, WG Drones is relocating its operations to Catalonia, where it expects to create around ten high-value technology jobs.
WG Drones, a company specializing in drone technology for light and pyrotechnic shows, has relocated its operations from Mexico to Girona (Catalonia). Founded in 2020 by a Catalan entrepreneur, the company began commercializing its products in 2022 and already has over 8,000 drones on the market. These have been featured in events such as Barcelona’s La Mercè festivities and the Millennium celebrations of Montserrat Abbey, through productions by the Girona-based company Flock Drone Art Studio, which uses WG Drones’ technology for its shows.
For the relocation of WG Drones’ operations from Mexico to Catalonia, the company has received support from Catalonia Trade & Investment, the business competitiveness agency of the Ministry for Business and Labour, through its delegation in Girona.
“When we decided to make the move to Europe, we knew it had to be Catalonia”
Xavier Páez, WG Drones’ founder
The WG Drones project was launched in 2020 in response to a market opportunity in the development of technology and electronics for drones used in light and pyrotechnic shows. Since then, the company has developed a flexible drone with proprietary GPS and flight control technology that can adapt to various components.
According to WG Drones’ founder, Xavier Páez, "When we decided to make the move to Europe, we knew it had to be Catalonia, and specifically Girona, to be close to one of our main clients, Flock Drone Art Studio. We have a very close relationship with them, and they have a certified flight field where we can carry out the necessary tests for our equipment." For Páez, the city of Girona “is a very convenient location, offering a high quality of life, strong infrastructure, and excellent connectivity with the rest of Europe.”
The company will now centralize all its technology development in Girona, where it will also assemble drones for European and Middle Eastern clients. In fact, WG Drones is responsible for the technology and assembly of the drones, which are then sold to companies and production studios specializing in light and pyrotechnic shows, to whom the company also offers support in training, maintenance, and accessories for the equipment.
WG Drones has relocated to Girona with a team of five people from Mexico and plans to double its workforce, hiring highly qualified researchers.
Currently, the company has drone fleets operating in Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, the Maldives, Qatar, Italy, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States.
