The US food company’s facilities in Granollers and Montornès del Vallès (Barcelona) contribute €93 million to Catalonia’s GDP, according to a new study.

Mondelēz International, the US-based food company behind brands including Oreo, Philadelphia, Fontaneda and Royal, is reinforcing its industrial presence in Catalonia through its production facilities in Granollers and Montornès del Vallès (Barcelona).

According to a new study by independent consultancy Afi, the company’s activity at these two sites generates €93 million in GDP for Catalonia and supports around 1,400 jobs, taking into account direct, indirect and induced effects.

The findings form part of the report "The value of Mondelēz’s activity in Spain", which analyses the company’s economic, industrial and territorial contribution in Spain using an Input-Output methodology.

€27 million invested in Catalan production

Between 2020 and 2025, Mondelēz invested €27 million in its production centers in Granollers and Montornès del Vallès, as part of more than €107 million invested across its four manufacturing facilities in Spain.

The investments have contributed to strengthening the company’s operational and technological capabilities in Catalonia, which is home to two of Mondelēz’s four production sites in Spain.

The Montornès del Vallès facility produces more than 9,000 tonnes of desserts annually, mainly under the Royal brand. Around half of this production is exported to international markets, highlighting the role of the Catalan site within Mondelēz’s international production network.

Meanwhile, the Granollers plant produces biscuits, alongside Mondelēz’s facility in Viana, Navarra. Together, the two sites produce around 70,000 tonnes of biscuits per year, including Oreo, Príncipe and Fontaneda, with approximately 70% exported.

This export activity accounts for 28% of Spain’s total biscuit exports, according to the Afi study.

Catalonia as an industrial and export hub

Mondelēz’s footprint in Catalonia illustrates the region’s role as a manufacturing and export base for the food industry. The company combines production for the domestic market with international manufacturing and distribution, connecting its Catalan operations to global markets.

The company has operated in Spain since 1968 and is part of Mondelēz International, a multinational food company present in more than 150 countries. Its portfolio includes global brands such as Oreo, Philadelphia, Milka and Toblerone, as well as established Spanish brands including Fontaneda, Príncipe, El Caserío and Royal.

Across Spain, Mondelēz generated €790 million in total economic impact in 2025, including direct, indirect and induced effects, while supporting approximately 11,400 jobs. The company employed around 1,375 people directly in Spain.

The figures highlight the contribution of Mondelēz’s industrial operations to manufacturing, employment, exports and the wider food ecosystem in Catalonia.
