UK semiconductor company Aion Silicon establishes its primary European design center in Barcelona

The UK company Aion Silicon (formerly Sondrel), dedicated to the design and implementation of technological solutions in the field of semiconductors, has opened in Barcelona one of its main design centers in Europe, the first under this brand. The company, a specialist in “System on a Chip” (SoC) designs, already has a team in Catalonia with significant expansion goals for the future.  Aion's growth in the region is intended to span all engineering disciplines, from architecture and front-end design to verification and back-end engineering.

For its establishment in Catalonia, Aion Silicon has had the support of ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment, the agency that facilitates the growth of companies in the Government of Catalonia.

Aion Silicon strengthens its global network to develop high-performance custom chips for AI, automotive, 5G, and HPC applications. The design center in Catalonia focuses on end-to-end solution development for customers across the European Union.

The company trusts that its presence in Catalonia will improve its ability to scale projects efficiently in multiple time zones and add the excellence of European engineering. The Aion Silicon team in Barcelona, which combines local and international staff, has multidisciplinary profiles in the field of semiconductor engineering, including architecture, RTL, verification, physical implementation, and software integration.

The company plans sustained growth over the next three years in response to increasing demand. Aion Silicon values Catalonia’s strong semiconductor ecosystem and intends to expand its team with both local and international talent.

With over 20 years of experience in SoC architecture and front-end and back-end services under the Sondrel brand, the company maintains offices in Europe, including France and Finland. The transition to the Aion Silicon brand and the opening of the Barcelona design center represent the company’s first major investment in Europe and its largest expansion on the continent in recent years.
