sonae, portugal's largest retailer, has invested €5m in the online supermarket ulabox, thus becoming one of the main shareholders of the company that was started by jaume gomà, david baratech and sergi de pablos in 2011.
sonae joins the company of investors such as miquel alimentació, that obtained 30% of the capital in 2013, as well as other funds and private investors, which in 2011 gave an important boost to the company.
jaume gomà declared that with this new round of financing the company was seeking an investment "that finally gives the company the growth it needs to consolidate it as spain’s leading online supermarket.”
after four years in business, ulabox, which employs some 30 people, has become one of the major online food & drink companies in spain with a turnover of €4m in 2014, doubling its 2013 figures, 35,000 active clients and a product portfolio featuring 12,500 articles.
sonae, with yearly sales over €5,000m, is the largest retailer in portugal owning companies like continente, sportzone and the home appliances chain worten.
