The 2024 edition of the world's biggest and most impactful connectivity event surpassed half a billion euros for the first time, and resulted in the creation of more than 9,200 part-time jobs throughout the city of Barcelona.
The GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024 solidified its position as the world's leading connectivity event, not only due to industry advancements but also because of its significant contribution to the host city's economy.
According to a recent report by the GSMA, the 2024 edition generated an impressive €502 million in economic impact for Barcelona, surpassing the half-billion euro mark for the first time.
This figure represents more than double the economic impact of the inaugural MWC Barcelona held in 2006. Furthermore, since its inception, MWC Barcelona has contributed a staggering €6.3 billion to the Barcelona economy.

Beyond the substantial financial boost, MWC Barcelona 2024 also played a vital role in job creation. The event fostered the creation of over 9,200 part-time jobs across Barcelona, marking a 100-job increase compared to 2023. This brings the estimated total number of part-time jobs generated by MWC Barcelona since 2006 to over 160,000 across Catalonia.
"Our contribution to Barcelona's prosperity and economic opportunities is clear, and we are delighted and proud to be part of the success of this city, which means so much to us. MWC and Barcelona are the perfect combination of innovation, collaboration, and mutual success – without the support of Host City Partners and the people of Barcelona, we wouldn't be able to put on such a successful event, year after year. We are so grateful for this public-private partnership", said GSMA Ltd.'s CEO, John Hoffman.
The 2024 edition was a global success, attracting over 101,000 attendees from 205 countries and territories. This diverse group of participants included more than 2,700 exhibitors, sponsors, and partners. Interestingly, over 59% of attendees came from industries outside the core mobile ecosystem, highlighting the broad reach and influence of the event.
MWC Barcelona 2024 served as a platform for vibrant discussions, industry leader networking, and product launches. The event also convened policymakers who play a crucial role in shaping the digital economy. A testament to its significance, the GSMA Ministerial Programme brought together over 180 delegations from 140 countries. This high-level gathering included heads of state, ministers, regulatory authority leaders, and representatives from intergovernmental organizations.
With its unique blend of exhibitions, conferences, and a focus on policymaking, MWC Barcelona continues to be a driving force in the mobile industry and a significant economic contributor to the city.
