Barcelona port authority is to create a consortium with public company cimalsa to build a major intermodal rail complex in far d'empordà, in northern catalonia. the facility will possess an area of 60 hectares and will host a 750-meter-long train station, with capacity for trains with standard and iberian gauge. the port of barcelona currently uses rail service only for 4% of its freight; the new intermodal station should increase that figure to about 30%.
in addition to the prat terminal at barcelona port, the new empordà terminal "will be the biggest logistics rail project in catalonia,” cimalsa general director ignasi ragàs said.
