The first phase of the project, called AQ-BCN1, is expected to be completed by 2025 and will provide 60 MW of computing power.
German company AQ Compute, a provider of colocation data centers with a strong focus on sustainability, has commenced the construction of its second data center in Barcelona. The first phase of the 60 MW campus of the new site AQ-BCN1 is expected to be completed in 2025.
This expansion follows the company's first data center near Oslo, which started operations in February 2024.

The new Barcelona facility, located in Parc de l'Alba (Cerdanyola del Vallès), is designed to meet the needs of artificial intelligence (AI) and will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
The campus will consist of independent buildings, the first of which will have a capacity of 15 MW and a total area of 43,000 square meters. The design also includes cooling systems suitable for high-density racks and meets Tier III design principles. In addition, the facility will offer 24/7 remote hands-on services and a research and development center for training and innovation.
The company works with CBRE Project Management as project manager and PQI, a joint venture between PGI Data Centers and PQC, as a design partner. GSE, the general contractor, will manage construction.
Henry Daunert, CEO of AQ Compute, comments: "With the start of construction of our data center in Barcelona, we are continuing our company's growth strategy. We see an increasing demand for power-intensive IT applications and corresponding server capacities, which highly require energy and cost-efficient solutions while simultaneously focusing on sustainability. This is exactly where our data centers come into play".
Aina Juliol, CEO at PQI Engineering, adds: "We are looking forward to this joint, pioneering project in which we are contributing with all our knowledge and expertise of IT consulting services, architectural & MEP engineering design from almost 30 years of experience in the market to ensure its success".
Joan Carles Aguado, Country Manager of GSE Spain and Portugal, says: "It is an honor to collaborate on this project with AQ Compute, a brand of Aquila Group, with whom we have successfully partnered on projects both here on the Iberian Peninsula and internationally".
AQ Compute provides flexible and modular colocation data centers in prime metropolitan areas that are built to handle the highest densities. The data centers are AI-ready and suitable for all computing, storage, and GPU applications.
To provide its clients with a wide range of locations, AQ Compute is working on entering additional markets in Europe. Its first data centers are in Norway and Spain – with more to follow.
