The new lab, which spans over 2,000 square meters, is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive battery abuse testing facilities. The facility offers a comprehensive range of safety and durability testing, including thermal propagation, fire resistance, drop tests, crush tests, and water immersion scenarios. These procedures allow the company to thoroughly evaluate battery performance under extreme conditions, ensuring both safety and quality standards are met.
Furthermore, the facility incorporates advanced environmental protection systems, such as gas scrubbing and water treatment, to prevent any negative environmental impact from the rigorous testing processes.
In addition to its advanced testing capabilities, the laboratory is fully integrated into IDIADA's overall battery engineering services. These services cover the entire battery development process, from the initial selection of battery cells to full system validation. The lab combines abuse tests with other test programs, such as aging and performance evaluations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to battery engineering.
"This new Battery Safety Lab represents a major step forward in our commitment to innovation and safety in the rapidly evolving field of battery technology", says Miquel Maureso, Head of e-Powertrain at Applus+ IDIADA. "As the automotive industry continues its shift towards electrification, our expanded capabilities will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and performance of the next generation of battery systems", he adds.
With the opening of this new facility in Catalonia, Applus+ IDIADA further consolidates its position as a leader in battery development and safety testing, supporting the automotive industry's move towards more sustainable and electrified mobility solutions.
