Amazon has announced that it will be opening a new logistics centre in El Far d'Empordà, Girona (Catalonia), next year. It will be the company's first logistics centre in the Girona province.
The presence of Amazon in Catalonia has increased significantly in recent years. By the end of 2021, the company will have more than 10 operations centres in the region: three logistics centres in El Prat, Martorelles and Castellbisbal; a distribution centre in Barberà del Vallés; seven logistics stations located in Rubí, Montcada i Reixac, Mollet del Vallès, Parets, Tarragona and two in Barcelona; and an urban centre, located in Barcelona.
"We are proud to expand our operations in Spain with this new logistics centre to respond to growing customer demand, better support small independent retailers and continue creating high-quality jobs," said Fred Pattje, Director of Amazon Customer Fulfillment in France, Italy and Spain. To date, Amazon employs more than 12,000 people in Spain and plans to end 2021 with 15,000 permanent employees.
In the words of Jaume Arnall, mayor of El Far d'Empordà, “the arrival of Amazon, a result of the collaboration between the company and the municipal team, is very good news both for our municipality and for the entire Alt Empordà region and the province of Girona. The region's positioning as an important logistics hub will be accompanied with the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs that will greatly boost the economy and boost job opportunities for our residents”.
