The Catalan company is one of the few in Europe capable of transforming RFID-based labels, which enable product traceability and can be customized for any sector.
The Catalan company Trace ID inaugurated on Monday a new chip welding plant in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). The company is a pioneer in this field in Europe and one of the few on the continent transforming RFID technology, which enables product identification and traceability.
The project led by Trace ID is supported by ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment and has received 175,400 euros in funding through the business R&D grant scheme to drive the research and development of its products at these new facilities. The company collaborates with INTEXTER at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – BarcelonaTech (UPC) and with Twin Inversors. Furthermore, to expand its facilities, the company also received a grant of 122,000 euros from the Directorate General for Industry of the Government of Catalonia for productive investment projects.

The inauguration of Trace ID’s new facilities was attended by the Minister for Business and Labour, Miquel Sàmper; the Secretary for Business and Competitiveness and CEO of ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment, Jaume Baró; and the Secretary for Digital Policies, Maria Galindo. The Minister for Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, and the Mayor of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, David Quirós, also took part in the event.
The company has opened this new 2,000 m2 space equipped with machinery for designing RFID labels and for their transformation and printing on any surface, improving security and ensuring the traceability of all types of products.
For example, the chips designed by Trace ID enable processes such as product identification at self-checkout counters in shops and supermarkets, or the inspection of packaged items in logistics environments without having to open them. The technology is applied in sectors as diverse as textiles, food, aerospace, and automotive, among others.
The company has invested around 1.3 million euros in the new facilities and machinery, which allow it to design and customize each of the chips it works with. Trace ID has a portfolio of more than 3,500 references, all of them unique, as they start from a standard design that is later customized to the requirements of each product and industry. RFID technology works in a similar way to barcodes, without the need for a visual field, but instead through detecting the waves emitted by each chip embedded in a product, which contains all the information required by the manufacturer.
Founded in 2007, Trace ID is part of the Twin Inversors 2007 group, which specializes in RFID labeling. It currently has a staff of around thirty people and a turnover of nearly 4 million euros. Its main market is Europe, with a network of suppliers in China, the United States, and Catalonia. The company is an active member of the Catalonia Semiconductor and Chips Alliance. Overall, the Twin Inversors 2007 group employs around 400 people and has a turnover of approximately 53 million euros.
