“Chinese companies have invested more than 1,000 million euros in Catalonia in the last five years, creating more than 2,000 jobs”

Roger Torrent, Minister of Business and Labour of Catalonia

According to the Minister of Business and Labour, Roger Torrent, "It is no coincidence that Chinese companies such as Shanghai Jingqingrong Garment have decided to start their international expansion strategy in Catalonia: one of the most industrialized regions in Europe and one of the main gateways to the continent". In this sense, he highlights that "Chinese companies have invested more than 1,000 million euros in Catalonia in the last five years, projects that have led to the creation of more than 2,000 jobs".

Founded in 2004, Shanghai Jingqingrong Garment specializes in designing, manufacturing, and distributing apparel products worldwide. The company works for large international fashion multinationals (such as Uniqlo, H&M, and COS), with customers mainly in the European Union, the United States and Canada. The company has a total of 2,000 employees. In China, it has branches in Shanghai and the provinces of Henan and Anhui.

Increasing investment from China in Catalonia

The Chinese company was one of the companies with which the Catalan institutional delegation, led by Minister Torrent, met in the Asian country last October, organized by the Catalonia Trade & Investment office in Hong Kong. Specifically, the company's executives met with the General Director of Industry, Oriol Alcoba.

The purpose of the trip was to enhance trade relations with Catalonia and encourage new foreign investment projects. The institutional trip included working meetings with Chinese multinationals in various sectors, such as technology, automotive, semiconductor, and chemical industries, as well as a promotional event in front of around fifty Hong Kong company directors.

In the last five years, foreign investment from China in Catalonia has reached 1,164 million euros, which has led to the creation of 2,100 new jobs, according to ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment data from the Financial Times' fDi Markets. There are currently 114 subsidiaries of Chinese companies in Catalonia. In fact, ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment has promoted several initiatives in recent years to facilitate the establishment of Chinese companies in Catalonia, such as Barcelona China's European Logistics Center (Barcelona) -in collaboration with the Port of Barcelona, the Barcelona City Council, and several specialized logistics operators- or the China Desk. In addition, several cooperation agreements have been signed in recent years with companies and public institutions to promote technological cooperation and strengthen business relations between the two territories.
