Catalonia has become the leading region in Spain for attracting NextGenerationEU funding, securing more than €10.18 billion from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

According to the latest figures from the Government of Catalonia, the milestone marks the first time the region has exceeded the €10 billion threshold, with funding benefiting more than 262,000 individuals, companies, research centers, public bodies, and nonprofit organizations.

The funding has played a key role in accelerating Catalonia's economic transformation, supporting strategic investments in innovation, industry, infrastructure, sustainability, and social development.

Speaking at the event The Impact of NextGenerationEU Funds in Catalonia, President Salvador Illa highlighted the region's ability to capitalize on the European recovery program. "Catalonia has made the most of these funds to drive an economic, social, and environmental transformation for the future, combining national ambition with a strong European vision," he said.

He also stressed that the successful implementation of the funds reflects a collaborative effort across institutions and the private sector: "Catalonia's success in attracting and deploying NextGenerationEU funds demonstrates our capacity to lead, identify opportunities, and deliver large-scale projects. It is a success shared by the Government, municipalities, and businesses."

Supporting innovation, industry, and competitiveness

The €10.18 billion has reached Catalonia through four main channels, including competitive national calls, direct allocations, regional transfers, and public procurement. Of the total amount secured, €9.35 billion has already been distributed to more than 262,300 beneficiaries.

Private companies and individual citizens account for the largest share of recipients, alongside local governments, research and education centers, and nonprofit organizations.

For international investors, the figures reinforce Catalonia's capacity to attract and efficiently manage large-scale public investment that strengthens the region's competitive ecosystem.

NextGenerationEU funding has supported flagship initiatives including the reindustrialization of the automotive sector, advanced semiconductor projects such as Innofab, transport and energy infrastructure, digital connectivity, and the expansion of affordable housing.

Investments strengthening Catalonia's economy

The funding has been concentrated in three major areas:

  • €4.1 billion invested in research, innovation, industry, services, and the primary sector.
  • €3.92 billion dedicated to infrastructure, including mobility, energy, water, environmental projects, and digital connectivity.
  • €1.32 billion supporting education, employment, healthcare, the social economy, sports, and cultural initiatives.

Barcelona province has received the largest share of funding, while substantial investments have also been directed to Tarragona, Girona, and Lleida, ensuring benefits across the territory.

President Illa also underlined Catalonia's commitment to playing a stronger role in Europe's future: "We led in NextGenerationEU funds, and now we also want to lead in strengthening the role of Europe's regions in shaping the European Union's future financing."

The results further reinforce Catalonia's position as one of Southern Europe's most dynamic locations for innovation-driven investment, where European funding is helping accelerate industrial modernization, technological development, and sustainable economic growth.
