Bayer expands its Expertise Hub in Barcelona with a new R&D area, welcoming 82 professionals

Bayer, the multinational pharmaceutical company, has launched a new R&D area at its Expertise Hub in Barcelona, adding 82 experts in agriculture and medicine.

The center has been recognized as Bayer's Hub of Excellence on a global scale, having integrated 82 new professionals into its team over the past year. The newly established R&D area is part of this hub and aims to enhance its capabilities to support global research efforts, advancing innovation in health and agriculture.

The new team will support all divisions of Bayer with highly scientific profiles dedicated to clinical trial operations, managing medication safety and quality processes, and automating data to enhance precision and decision-making in agriculture.

The project’s public presentation was attended by Salvador Illa, the President of the Government of Catalonia, along with key figures in clinical research.

President Salvador Illa acknowledged Bayer for promoting innovation and scientific development in two key areas of strategic interest for generating prosperity. The President also called for collaboration between all the actors involved in carrying out the "necessary transformation of the health system and maintaining the global reference position while ensuring access to innovation for the population while taking into account the system's sustainability".

The CEO of Bayer in Spain and Portugal, Jordi Sánchez, said: "This new project confirms our strength in developing innovation for the whole world and completes our value contribution from Spain. Our firm commitment in this regard remains with new investments every year, which in 2023 exceeded 130 million, but it would not be possible without the collaboration with the country's public and private institutions and the flourishing of a favorable ecosystem that allows us to continue contributing to the generation of employment and economic development".

Bayer's Hub of Expertise in Barcelona

The Bayer Service Center, located in San Joan Despí, Barcelona, was created in 2001 to provide accounting services. Since then, it has been incorporating new areas of development, specializing in applying artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, traceability, and agility in processes.

In the last 5 years, this center has increased its staff by 75%, from 471 to 822, focusing on scientific profiles. With this new project in 2024, it completes its contribution to the development of innovation in health and agriculture, key areas of the company, and where Spain is already a global reference.

This center also stands out for its contribution to the transformation and digitalization of Bayer, being a benchmark in implementing new models at a global level. Its team, which includes professionals from more than 50 nationalities, is an example in terms of gender, age, and cultural diversity, which allows it to develop projects with an international perspective, serving more than 11 countries in Europe, the Middle East, and the global structure in general.

The new project adds to the strategic positioning of this center, which has achieved the automation of the most repetitive tasks with the least added value in the areas of accounting and finance; the review of the value chain of Bayer's nearly 90,000 suppliers worldwide, which contributes to the process of reducing the company's carbon footprint; and the use of artificial intelligence data to predict product demand.
