Improved air connections with North America, Latin America and North Africa strengthen Catalonia's competitiveness as an international business destination.

Barcelona is expanding its international air connectivity with 11 new destinations and a 5.7% increase in airline seat capacity for the 2026 summer season, further reinforcing its position as one of Europe's leading gateways for international business and investment.

The Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport has scheduled 44.5 million seats between April and October 2026. Among the new routes are four long-haul destinations -Seattle (US), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru), and Agadir (Morocco)- strengthening links with North America, Central America, South America and North Africa.

The expanded network enhances Catalonia's international accessibility for companies, investors and global talent while supporting the region's growing role as a business hub in Southern Europe.

Barcelona ranks as Europe's second-largest origin and destination airport

Barcelona continues to consolidate its position among Europe's busiest airports. Between May 2025 and April 2026, the airport handled 58.2 million passengers, ranking seventh in Europe by total traffic.

More significantly for business travel, Barcelona welcomed 52.8 million origin-and-destination (O&D) passengers, making it Europe's second-largest airport for direct passenger traffic, behind only London Heathrow. With only 9% of passengers in transit, Barcelona stands out as a point-to-point airport driven by strong local demand rather than connecting traffic, reflecting the city's attractiveness as both a business and tourism destination.

The airport also posted 4.6% year-on-year passenger growth, outperforming several major European hubs, including London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

New routes strengthen intercontinental connections

The addition of long-haul services further expands Barcelona's global reach. The new direct route to Seattle improves connectivity with the US West Coast and one of North America's leading technology ecosystems. New flights to San Salvador and Lima strengthen links with Latin America, while Agadir adds further connectivity with North Africa.

The airport has also welcomed new airlines on existing routes, increasing competition and offering more flight frequencies across established markets. Africa has seen particularly strong growth, driven by expanded services to Morocco and Gambia.

International demand continues to grow

Barcelona Airport handled 58.5 million passengers between June 2025 and May 2026, representing a 4.7% increase compared with the previous 12-month period. Passenger growth was recorded throughout the year, highlighting the resilience of international demand beyond the traditional summer peak.

Intercontinental traffic has been especially dynamic. Passenger numbers to Africa increased by 14.8%, while Asia grew by 11.7%, supported by improved connectivity with China. South America also continued its steady expansion, reaching 1.08 million passengers, up 8.1%, with the launch of the new Lima route expected to further strengthen the market.

Greater connectivity supports Catalonia's global competitiveness

The continued expansion of Barcelona Airport reflects Catalonia's growing international profile and strengthens the region's competitiveness as a destination for foreign investment, international business operations and global events.

Improved air connectivity is a key factor for multinational companies when selecting investment locations, facilitating access to international markets, talent and strategic partners. With new long-haul routes and increasing passenger volumes, Barcelona continues to reinforce its position as one of Europe's best-connected business destinations.
