Amazon will be opening a new logistics center in Barberà del Vallès, Barcelona, that is expected to create 230 permanent jobs in its first three years of operation. The US online retail giant’s new project is the seventh center located in Catalonia and will be starting operations this coming fall.
According to the company’s press release, these facilities will be the first in Europe equipped with Pegasus Drives, Amazon robotics technology that support the company’s employees in managing customer orders.
The distribution center in Barberà del Vallès will occupy an area of more than 28,000 m² (approximately four football fields) and will manage the packages received from other logistics centers before they are transported to logistics stations. From there, they will finally be picked up by drivers to be delivered to customers.
Pegasus Drives are robotic units that manage and direct individual packages. They receive packages individually on their conveyor belt, move through the robotized field and place the package on the appropriate ramp depending on the destination point. According to the company, they are designed to achieve greater efficiency in the distribution process.
