
Catalonia strengthens its aquaculture sector

Catalonia's sant carles de la rapita has consolidated itself as the headquarters of the growing catalan aquaculture cluster. the city is home to some fifty fishing companies and also houses the rapita school of aquaculture.
the catalan aquaculture sector employs about a thousand people and has annual revenue of eur 400 million. most of the small and medium sized businesses are located near the ebro river delta, but some of them are also in the area of barcelona and the maresme region. the sector experienced a 30% growth last year and prospects for 2010 remain extremely positive.
the catalan institute of agriculture and food research and technology (irta) is now working with local fish suppliers to develop a new strategic plan, an initiative to be financed by the catalan government.
