Catalonia-based company AMES to invest €8 million in new factory in China, creating over 200 jobs

30 Jul 2025

With the support of Catalonia Trade & Investment’s Beijing office, AMES is strengthening its industrial presence in the Chinese market.

The President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, visited the new production plant of Catalan company AMES in Wuhu this Wednesday, as part of his official visit to China. The head of the government met with representatives of the company to learn more about their new production and logistics facilities, which triple their previous surface area to a total of 14,000 m². AMES expects to create over 200 jobs at these facilities over the next five years.

For its projects in China, AMES has received support from Catalonia Trade & Investment, the agency for business competitiveness under the Ministry for Business and Labour. In fact, when the company first established itself in the Asian country in 2017, it did so with the assistance of Catalonia Trade & Investment’s local Beijing office.

The company has opened these new facilities to increase the capacity of its existing production center in Wuhu, which is adjacent to the new site and located within the same industrial park, where AMES still has space available for future expansion. The company has invested 8 million euros in the construction of the new building and the acquisition of new machinery. Once fully operational in the coming months, the new facility will also absorb the production of the former plant. The existing building will then be repurposed as AMES’s new logistics center in China. In total, the company will occupy 14,000 m².

In its initial phase, the new AMES plant will focus on producing sintered structural components for the automotive sector, a product line already manufactured at the previous site, with plans to add new lines in the future. The current facility employs around 80 people and is already operating machinery, including two furnaces for structural sintered parts. The company expects to add one or two more furnaces, as well as presses and other types of machinery. The site currently has around 100 employees and includes office space.

AMES plans to continue expanding its operations in China over the coming years. Its goal is to build a third production plant within the same industrial park, which would become the company’s only two-story factory. AMES still has room on the same plot for a future expansion of up to 6,000 m², which would bring the total area of the plant to approximately 20,000 m² once the entire site is occupied.

Founded in 1951 and headquartered in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, AMES operates nine plants dedicated to production, tooling, machinery, and robotics, located in Catalonia, Huesca, Hungary, the United States, and China. The company also has commercial offices in Switzerland, Italy, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, China, and Japan. Globally, AMES employs over 1,000 people and closed the 2024 financial year with revenues of 155 million euros.
