Essity's expansion project in Catalonia has received support from ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment through a €200,000 grant from its High Impact Business Investments line.
The Swedish company Essity, a global leader in hygiene and health, opened a new production line this Friday at its factory in Puigpelat (Tarragona, Catalonia). The company has invested €24 million in manufacturing incontinence products, which will be added to its existing production of tissue derivatives such as toilet paper, napkins, and diapers. This is the first plant in Europe where the company will produce all of its product lines in one facility.

Essity's expansion in Catalonia has been supported by ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment through a €200,000 grant from the high-impact business investments subsidy line.
Minister Miquel Sàmper attended the inauguration event, emphasizing "Essity's commitment to consolidate its presence in Puigpelat". He set it as an example of the government's objective to generate wealth throughout the territory. In this sense, the Minister of Business and Labour highlighted "the creation of 20 jobs by the company and the will to increase productivity in two lines next year".
The Minister recalled that "the Ministry of Business and Labour has as its objective the generation of wealth and we will always help companies to grow and consolidate". Sàmper highlighted "the commitment to retain talent in the company" and assured that "we want to establish a dual vocational training model, like the German model, although it's not easy".
Essity's director of operations in Catalonia, Míriam Guasch, stated, "Essity's Tarragona plant is a flagship facility for our group in Europe. Over the past five years, we've invested more than 100 million euros here. Talent has been essential to our success, which is why we collaborate closely with local universities and schools".
Essity's new production in Puigpelat focuses on products for incontinence, a condition that affects more than six million people in Spain, of which over two million suffer chronically. These products, marketed under the Tena and Orly brands, will be distributed from Camp de Tarragona across Europe.
In doing so, the company strengthens its commitment to the plant in Catalonia, which already produces tissue derivatives and diapers. Moreover, Essity plans to expand its production capacity further by launching a line dedicated to feminine hygiene products and another for jumbo-format tissue paper by 2025.
Essity, a Swedish multinational with a presence in over 150 countries, manufactures tissue-based products, diapers, and feminine hygiene products for well-known consumer brands such as Colhogar and TENA, as well as for private labels of major retail chains.
Essity employs over 750 of its 1,200 workers in Catalonia, Spain, where it has operated since 1998. Of these, 500 are located at the Puigpelat plant, while the rest are spread across the company's offices, sales team, and logistics hub in Barcelona.
