The German company has started up a new world-scale facility for the production of chlorine in Tarragona.

The German company Covestro will invest 200 million euros in a new world-scale facility for the production of chlorine in Tarragona (Catalonia). This new project will involve the creation of 50 new jobs in the area.

The new chlorine plant strengthens the European MDI production network by producing a sustainable supply of chlorine with an innovative oxygen-depolarized cathode technology (ODC) developed by Covestro in collaboration with ThyssenKrupp Nucera.

Dr. Markus Steilemann, Covestro's CEO, stated: "The successful start-up of the new plant is good news, both economically and ecologically, for Covestro and our site in Tarragona."

“The new plant strengthens Tarragona's position as the benchmark for chemistry in southern Europe”

Andrea Firenze, General Manager of Covestro in Spain

The General Manager of Covestro in Spain, Andrea Firenze, announced: "The arrival of this plant allows us to strengthen Covestro's MDI production in Tarragona significantly. Having our own independent chlorine supply allows us to increase our MDI plant's efficiency and competitiveness. Moreover, the new plant also strengthens Tarragona's position as the benchmark for chemistry in southern Europe, promoting the area's economic and social development and directly and indirectly generating new jobs."

Covestro is one of the leading worldwide producers of high-quality polymer materials and their components. It supplies customers worldwide in mobility, building and living, and the electrical and electronics providing sectors such as sports and leisure, cosmetics and health, and the chemical industry.

The German company generated sales of 15.9 billion euros in fiscal 2021. At the end of 2021, the company had 50 production sites worldwide and employed approximately 17,900 people (calculated as full-time equivalents).
