Barcelona Airport to invest €153 million in Terminal 2 modernization

Aena has announced a €153.4 million investment to comprehensively renovate Terminal 2 at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport between 2027 and 2031. The project is the largest overhaul of the terminal since it was built in 1963 and aims to prepare the airport for the mobility needs of the coming decades.

The renovation will modernize passenger facilities, improve operational efficiency and reinforce Barcelona Airport's role as one of southern Europe's leading international gateways for tourism, trade and foreign investment.

The refurbishment will include a complete redesign of the terminal's interior and exterior spaces, creating brighter, more accessible and technology-enabled facilities for travelers.

Among the main improvements are:

• A full renovation of passenger areas and commercial spaces.
• Reopening and integration of Module A, increasing operational capacity.
• Expanded security checkpoints equipped with next-generation screening technology.
• New digital signage and interactive passenger information systems.
• Improved baggage handling infrastructure.

The redevelopment will be carried out while keeping the airport fully operational.

Better public transport connections at Barcelona Airport

A key objective of the project is to strengthen intermodal mobility by improving links between air and rail transport.
Terminal 2 will offer better integration with the Barcelona Metro and the future R-Aeroport rail line, making it easier for passengers, workers and business travelers to access the airport using public transport.

The project will also improve pedestrian routes, cycling infrastructure and traffic circulation around the terminal.

Sustainability at the core of the Terminal 2 renovation

The modernization incorporates sustainability measures throughout the project. These include LED lighting, increased use of natural daylight, energy-efficient systems, Mediterranean landscaping, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and redesigned public spaces that prioritize pedestrians and cyclists.
