Why VMware chose Barcelona to build a new Digital Sales Center

The software company VMware invested €90 million and created over 200 jobs in a new Digital Sales Center in Barcelona (Catalonia). The California-based firm is running its digital sales across Europe, the Middle East and Africa from this center in Catalonia.

VMware provides cloud, networking, safety and computational solutions to over 500,000 clients around the world helped by a 75,000-partner ecosystem.

VMware is one of the multinationals that, in recent years, have selected Barcelona to establish an international tech hub, as have many other US companies such as PepsiCo, Google, Microsoft or HP. To execute this investment project, VMware had the support of Catalonia Trade & Investment.

Ignacio Arrieta, Solutions Engineering Director for Iberia, detailed VMware’s participation at the most important global event for new technologies: Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress 2023. At the congress, VMware focused on edge computing and solutions for bringing sustainability into telecommunications networks. 

According to Ignacio Arrieta, Barcelona’s dynamic ecosystem of startups and technology played a key role on VMware’s decision to invest in Catalonia. The availability of skilled talent was another reason for the company to locate in Barcelona - more specifically, in the city’s booming 22@ technology district.

The 22@ district in Barcelona concentrates 12,150 companies that employ about 96,000 people. According to figures from 22@Network BCN, the
district concentrates 6.3% of the productive fabric of the city, generates 14.5% of GDP (€10,215 million) and brings together 12.5% ​​of total work places.
