Cooperate with a Catalan firm for your R&D project

Do you need a partner for your R&D project? Work together with a Catalan company and apply for funding through the Nuclis programme.

Nuclis Catalonia

What do we fund?

The Nuclis programme provides funding for research organizations and companies that develop joint R&D projects to obtain prototypes and demonstrations of new products, processes and technologies.

The programme offers financial support to the Catalan company in the project, whereas the foreign partner should apply to their local funding program.

Catalonia Trade & Investment has agreements already in place with local agencies in France, Germany, South Korea, Quebec and Israel, and will help you get funding from other local agencies too. Please click on the countries to learn more about the advantages in each case.

All participants in the joint project have to sign an international consortium agreement including every partner’s role in the project.

Who can apply?

The joint project may involve a minimum of two companies: one with its operating base in Catalonia, plus one from another country. Alternatively, it may involve a company with its operating base in Catalonia, plus an international technological centre.

Priority is given to high impact and differential R&D projects in these sectors: food, energy and resources, industrial systems, design, sustainable mobility, health and experience-based industries.

Key technologies that will be highly considered are: ICT, nanotech, photonics, advanced materials, biotech and advanced manufacturing.

The Catalan part of the project must be developed in Catalonia.

How does funding work?

  • The minimum project budget is 150,000€.
  • Grant intensity will be up to 70% of the project.
  • Grants will be direct and non-refundable, of up to 150,000€.
  • Projects can last a maximum of 3 years.
  • Catalonia Trade & Investment will support project partners during project proposal, evaluation and monitoring phases.

Fostering international cooperation

Since its launch in 2012, the Nuclis programme has provided €4.5M in funding for 24 international R&D projects that involved partners from 6 different countries.

Success case

New 3D tool to calculate soil humidity

This new 3D technology, developed by the Catalan company Starlab together with the Chilean company Amphos 21, uses data collected via satellite to calculate soil humidity levels aimed at optimizing irrigation. It will combine satellite information with on-the-ground humidity sensors located in agricultural zones and will increase the depth of humidity detection in soil from 5 centimeters up to 50.

Success case

New 3D printing technology for small electronic devices

The Catalan company FAE and German company Neotech AMT are developing a new technology to build ceramic solid parts with 3D printed electronics embedded in its structure.

This new system will make it possible to manufacture smaller and more efficient electronic devices. The result will be a powerful industrial tool for companies to produce novel, miniaturized 3D electronic systems at a low cost and with a high level of customization.

Energy-saving software based on artificial intelligence

The Catalan company DEXMA is currently developing a software based on artificial intelligence to help companies save energy. DEXMA is implementing the project with a UK-based partner with funding from the Nuclis programme.

This software is intended for small, medium-sized businesses and large corporations. It obtains information on their energy consumption through electricity supplier companies, and offers them energy efficiency recommendations. The new system is currently at the pilot stage in almost 3,500 buildings.

This project has been cofunded by the FEDER programme Catalonia 2014-2020.
