The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), a state-of-the-art infrastructure in Catalonia that hosts more than 700 international researchers, will join forces with US tech company Intel to build a €400M microchip design lab in Barcelona.
Mateo Valero, director of the BSC, explains in this interview how this will be one of the largest labs in the world that will create high-performance chips to be used in applications such as the future autonomous cars, supercomputers, and Artificial Intelligence. The microchip lab expects to create 1,000 new jobs in Barcelona in the next five years.

Mateo Valero, Director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Over 800 people work at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center; around 700 are researchers, 40% of whom are from 53 countries, with 30 different degrees and skills in researching various computer science topics.
According to Mateo Valero, this is the base for advanced science and engineering: the cross-collaboration and cross-pollination between different skills.
