Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has launched a pilot lab to develop an autonomous system to live in outer space. The initiative is part of a joint effort with the European Space Agency (ESA) to work on strategies for space traveling to distant destinations.
The project, known by the acronym Melissa, is the only comprehensive facility designed to test the feasibility of closed loop space stations. The lab will test all necessary processes to develop a facility that enables humans to live in space and travel to Mars or other planets.
