German chemical company BASF will build a new international engineering hub based in La Canonja plant (Tarragona) and in Madrid. The sites will operate projects at a European level.

The new site will serve as a strategic connection point for data communications between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, with Barcelona quickly becoming a vital subsea hub.

A total of 229 investment projects were announced (+11% year-on-year), which will create 19,500 jobs (16% more).

According to ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment, there are currently more than 22,000 Catalan companies in this sector, with a €30,240 million revenue (+2.5% year-on-year) and 182,800 jobs generated (+1.4%).

In the last five years, the number of technology hubs in Barcelona and Catalonia has more than doubled, reaching 96 hubs, 78% of them based in Barcelona.

This is one of the most prestigious international rankings used by multinationals when considering future business investment projects.

According to data from ACCIÓ-Catalonia Trade & Investment, this is the highest figure on record and highlights the strength of the foreign activity of Catalan companies despite a context of international complexity.

The German company has started up a new world-scale facility for the production of chlorine in Tarragona.

Minister Torrent has announced 94 foreign investment projects (15% more than in 2021) leading to the creation of 3,464 new jobs (an 11% increase).
