A company with big data in its origins
Bismart was founded 6 years ago in Barcelona Activa, the business incubator located in the Catalan capital. It was a success from the very beginning, winning as it did an award for the best business plan, called Barcelona Entrepreneur Capital, which allowed the company to generate revenue right from the start. This award also meant it developed an excellent relationship – still going strong today – with Barcelona’s city council, and that it committed itself to some of the main smart cities values, such as city-governance, quality of life and economic development.
The company focuses on big data for smart cities and its business model seeks differentiation and specialization. In particular, Bismart offers solutions that help institutions such as city councils manage huge amounts of information, transforming them into an automated format in order to facilitate decision-making. All this means that Bismart helps city councils offer more understandable and transparent information on their performance and results, which is an ideal tool to build great relationships with citizens.
Albert Isern, CEO of Bismart, says, “big data makes chaos run like clockwork”. In other words, Bismart believes that managing “the right information, in the right format, at the right time” can help companies and institutions to be more intelligent and productive. Not surprisingly, Bismart stresses government insight and accountability as one of its main values and commits to clarifying Government plan implementation, the reusing of information and more open and transparent Governments. Some of Bismart’s solutions include data analytics, next generation dashboards, scorecards, key performance indicators, reporting, datawarehousing and data integrations.
The importance of a big partner
One of the reasons behind Bismart’s accelerated growth is the relationship of trust the company has established with the computer giant Microsoft. Bismart was appointed reference partner by the US software company and it was awarded the recognition of best global partner in 2013 during an act held at the Toyota centre (in the Houson Rockets Stadium) before 18,000 people. Bismart now benefits from improved relationships with software developers worldwide, thanks to the support of this valued and powerful partner.
In the context of its agreement with Microsoft, Bismart’s solutions are the flagship of Citynext, the Microsoft’s strategic worldwide initiative that empowers cities to put people first, providing the perfect solution for safer, smarter and healthier cities. To promote this, Citynext helps smart cities manage different fields such as health, education or public security, so that everybody can benefit from a joint effort to apply technology to everyday life in cities.
Barcelona: brand and boost
Bismart also benefits from its Barcelona origins. Not only because the Catalan capital, as a smart city reference, uses the company’s services, but also because bismart has an active role in promoting a city model with the main focus on citizens and their quality of life, offering data-driven decision tools that can be applied to smart cities. For instance, Bismart is responsible for the transparency website by Barcelona’s city council, or the city protocol, a platform where citizens collaborate to find solutions to shared problems such as population growth.
With more than 50 employees, Bismart is also located in Madrid and has reached a turnover of €2M. The company is now focusing on internationalization and is currently doing business in France (Cadarache), Qatar (Doha), USA (Florida) and studying Latin America as its next foreign market. As regards Bismart’s private clients, one can also see big names in different sectors such as the BBVA bank or Roche in pharma.
Furthermore, Bismart was also chosen by the city of New York as one of the participants in the world to NY – Smart & Sustainable Cities Global Challenge: an event where the US city brought together 15 of the business global leaders in the smart cities field. This project was supported by ACCIÓ and allowed Bismart to connect to New York and its technological and financial sector.
