The minister for Business and Knowledge, Jordi Baiget, opened this Wednesday the new facilities of the multinational Jabil in Tortosa and Aldea (Baix Ebre), representing the creation of up to 80 new jobs in a medium term timescale. These installations are a new technology centre and a new production centre for the company, specialised in design and manufacturing of packaging for the food & beverage sector.
The Minister thanked Jabil for “choosing Catalonia and Terres de l'Ebre to perform this new investment”, and stressed that, “the company has made a good choice; Catalonia is a place with economic activity that is spread out and diversified”. Baiget also said that the company is an exemplary one, “Jabil is a good example of what a company should do: enlarge its facilities and create an innovation centre. Sand the result is what we can see now, one of Europe’s most important development centres”.
The company’s investment project received the support of the Catalan Government via Catalonia Trade & Investment, the Catalan agency for foreign investment attraction. The company is also contemplating the enlargement of the plastics injection area and new logistics spaces.
Specifically, the new facilities in Aldea cover 6,000 square metres, including the new technological centre (1,000 m2) a new mould and die plant (3,500 m2) and new logistics areas (1,500 m2), At present, the 3 areas employ 73 people, the majority being engineers. The technological centre has the mission of developing new solutions and products in the plastics sector for the group on an international level, and represents the consolidation of the Baix Ebre facilities as the multinational’s most important hub in Europe. Furthermore, the Tortosa production plant has enlarged its plastics injection plant by 2,000 square metres, and expects to require workers when it is fully operational.
The multinational Jabil has some 180,000 workers around the world – 500 of whom are in the Tortosa and Aldea installations – and its head office is located in Florida. In July, 2015, it purchased the Catalan company, Plásticos Castellà, which was absorbed into the multinational group.
