Amazon has announced that it has chosen Barcelona to install its support centre for small and medium sized companies in Southern Europe. This will represent the multinational’s fourth investment in Catalonia, after the two logistics centres in El Prat and Castellbisbal Llobregat and the Prime Now fast delivery system. According to a statement released by the company, this new investment will involve the hiring of five hundred people in three years, 100 of whom will launch the centre this summer. It will consist of a multilingual centre for small French, Italian and Spanish companies selling through the Marketplace programme. According to the company, Barcelona was chosen by the international due to its network of recognized and talented professionals as well its strong SME base.

Amazon’s Head of Communications, Adam Sedo, said in statements to CNA that the company had decided to choose Barcelona again for two key reasons. On the one hand, due to the "available and highly prepared" international talent and, on the other, due to its good network of small and medium companies, which is "very dynamic and innovative." In this regard, he stressed that 21% of Spanish SMEs selling on Amazon are Catalan. Thanks to these factors, Barcelona prevailed over Madrid, Paris, Rome and Milan, which also had competed for the new centre.

According to the Minister for Business and Knowledge, Jordi Baiget, this new vote of confidence by Amazon in Catalonia, “is great news, not just for the direct jobs created, but also because it will represent a boost to our business, technological and digital ecosystem, as well an increase in the competitiveness of our small and medium sized companies”.

The Deputy Mayor for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation from the Barcelona City Council, Jaume Collboni, also said that the investment was very positive as it "generated jobs for the city. Creating quality jobs is the main challenge we have as a city and news such as this reinforces Barcelona’s leadership role as a Mediterranean economic powerhouse," he said.
