Catalonia, a videogaming point of reference

Barcelona and Catalonia are the place to be for national and international video games companies. The sector is rapidly growing and is home to major firms such as King, Scopely or Ubisoft. In fact, of all the startup ecosystem in Catalonia – more than 1,300 startups in total – segments like the mobile and gaming and the digital content and media are thriving and boosting the economy.

The Catalan business network in the audiovisual sector is leading the adoption of new formats and innovative ways of communication. At the forefront of its field in Europe, it is also focused on the evolution in consumer habits caused by digital transformation and its impact on business models. Many of these new business models are generated by startups that will provide services to traditional companies.

Education and talent attraction

The education and training network have a long-standing tradition in Catalonia. An excellent pool of universities provides world-class education, including the world’s number one business school for executive education training (IESE Business School). Education is closely linked to available talent, where the city of Barcelona performs highly: recently, it has been recognized as the 4th city in the world in capacity for attracting international talent.

A tourism and sports magnet

Barcelona received 12 million international visitors in 2018, 4.3% more than the previous year. Tourism is, therefore, one of the most powerful areas in the cultural and experience-based industries, supported by a strong international scene of music and arts-related events. Providers in the tourism sector face nowadays challenges like the merging with the ICT sector, the customization of services and the increase of consumer loyalty.

Moreover, Catalan society has strong links to sports, being home to soccer team FC Barcelona, top athletes like Marc Márquez or Kilian Jornet, and featuring world-class infrastructures like the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for motor sport competitions. The sports sector represents 2.1% of the Catalan economy: it is made up by more than 500 companies that generate €4,770M in turnover and represent 23,800 employees.
