- 102 Catalan companies will have a stand at the congress to find investors, meet partners and new clients, gain visibility and open new international markets
- Of these 102 companies, 73 will participate through the stand spaces enabled by the Catalan Government. This is the highest figure ever in the history of the MWC
- For the second year in a row, the Secretariat of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society promotes the Catalan smart drone sector with a Government stand hosting 12 companies, three more than in the previous edition
- Catalonia Trade & Investment and the Mobile World Capital Barcelona will enable 150 top executives of Catalan companies unrelated to the ICT sector to attend the MWC to identify new business opportunities and promote their digital transformation
The Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise and Knowledge of the Government of Catalonia, Pau Villoria, announced on Wednesday at a press conference that 102 Catalan companies will participate with a stand at the Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC), to be held between February 26 to March 1 at Fira de Barcelona - Gran Via in Hospitalet de Llobregat. This is the second year running with over 100 Catalan companies attending this event, consolidating a growing trend ever since it started being celebrated in Catalonia.
In fact, this 2018 will be the year the Catalan Government facilitates the largest presence of Catalan companies in the MWC. Thus, of the 102 total companies, 73 will participate in the MWC through the different spaces of 1,000m2 enabled once again by the Catalan Government through the Secretariat of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society and Catalonia Trade & Investment.
The goal is that these companies, which are mostly SMEs, build contacts and perform networking, gain visibility and strengthen their brand to find new investors, partners or customers. They will be distributed as follows:
- The Catalonia Stand located in the central part of the Congress where there will be 46 Catalan companies.
- The Catalonia Stand located at the App Planet (the area dedicated to mobile application developers), where there will be 16 Catalan companies.
- The Catalonia Drones Stand located in the area dedicated to entities in this sector that will host 12 companies.
*Eurecat will have space at the Catalonia Stand and in the Catalonia Drones Stand, but is only counted once within the global calculation of 73 companies.
Among these 73 Catalan organizations participating in the MWC, apart from companies, there are also 4 Catalan technology centres accredited with Catalonia Trade & Investments’ TECNIO label: Eurecat, present at the Stand Catalonia and the Catalonia Drones; the Centre for Computer Vision (CVC); the i2CAT Foundation; and the Technological Centre for Telecommunications of Catalonia (CTTC). Growth in the smart drone sector
After the excellent reception and interest that the Catalonia Drones Stand provoked in last year’s MWC, the Catalan Government once again put its support behind the drone sector and smart solutions with drones at the 2018 congress with a 65 square meter stand that will house 12 Catalan companies in the field, three more than in 2017. As in the previous edition, the stand will be located in the Drone Zone, the space that houses some of the most innovative companies in the field internationally and located in the MWC’s NEXTech Hall, featuring emerging technologies.
The growth in the number of companies at the Catalonia Smart Drones stand responds to the Catalan Government’s commitment, within the framework of its SmartCAT strategy, to a very well positioned sector and with great potential in Catalonia that is promoted and is boosted during the rest of the year by the Secretariat of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society along with the Catalonia Smart Drones working group
14,000 meetings in 13 editions of the MWC to find international partners
With the goal of guaranteeing the maximum impact of the MWC for Catalan companies participating in the MWC, once again Catalonia Trade & Investment organizes - as a member of the European Enterprise Network (EEN) of the European Commission - the Brokerage Event. This consists of the organization of 20-minute bilateral interviews between Catalan companies / technology centres with other companies or entities around the world attending the congress (also among foreign companies).
They are pre-scheduled meetings before the event with the aim of helping Catalan companies access international contacts, find potential partners to develop innovative projects and reach international cooperation agreements. For the first time this year the Brokerage Event will also be attended by 15 big companies (such as L'Oréal, MasterCard, Seat, Zobele, KLM and the BBC) who will not exhibit their products, but will attend to meet partners who offer them the technology they need to carry out their projects and respond to their challenges.
For the 2018 edition, the participation of more than 400 companies from 40 countries is expected, 30% of which will be Catalan. Since 2006, almost 5,400 companies, universities, research groups and public organizations have celebrated more than 14,000 meetings at the Brokerage Event organized by Catalonia Trade & Investment at the Mobile World Congress.
Amplify the impact over and beyond the ICT sector
Catalonia Trade and the Mobile World Capital Barcelona consolidate in 2018 the roadmap in the MWC for non-ICT professionals with the objective of expanding the impact of the Mobile World Congress on the entire productive fabric, an initiative which began last year. Thus, within the framework of the GoingDigital programme, 150 top executive of Catalan companies that are not part of the ICT sector will be able to identify the opportunities that mobile technologies could bring to their businesses in the current context of digital transformation.
These are companies from many different sectors – food, fashion, packaging, cosmetics, furniture, and so on – which will be divided into three groups according to their interests: industry 4.0, retail and future vehicles. Before the MWC they will attend specialized thematic workshops to analyse the technological trends within these sectors, while during the congress itself they will participate in organized visits to get to know first-hand the technologies presented by international exhibitors and that can be adopted to allow them to become more competitive. Furthermore, during the Mobile World Congress, companies can participate in the Brokerage Event to meet with companies in the ICT sector and find commercial and technological partners.
Besides the General Secretary of the Department of Business and Knowledge, Pau Villoria, who was accompanied by the Secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society, Jordi Puigneró, the press conference today was also attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, the Secretary of State for the Information Society and the Digital Agenda, José María Lassalle, the General Manager of Fira de Barcelona, Constantí Serrallonga, and the CEO of the Mobile World Capital, Carlos Grau.
